I came across this search for advice on another site. A young single women planning to live on her own for the first time...seeking advice from other women. It's an American site.
Needless to say, I was shocked...though maybe I shouldn't be...at how many advised on suitable weapons to keep nearby...hammers, knives, and, of course, guns.
I can't imagine giving my daughter, friend, niece, granddaughter, or stranger that advice.
If I was a site member, I would have asked if there were actual reasons to feel unsafe...was it a high crime area? I lived in some dodgy areas in and around NYC when I was young, but never felt THAT unsafe.

I do not advocate knives but since I mentioned it my sister now carries a rape alarm and the good old fashioned hat pin in her handbag
Agree with RH - although we don’t keep any cash in the house, if a burglar broke in I would just let them take whatever they wanted, as long as they didn’t hurt me.
I don't think a burglar would expect to find a lot of cash, they tend to go for jewellery, cameras, iphones, credit cards, maybe car keys (to nick your car as well!) etc.
If real savages they might hurt you to get your PIN numbers.
Best defence is to make sure you lock up properly with secure locks, have good neighbours & maybe an alarm/camera system if you're really worried.
