How does this work, for example, why is the pope a 'higher' catholic than the chap who works in my local chippy? Is he just better at believing?

The general idea is that the author of "Matthew", writing in about AD90, reports a conversation between Jesus and Peter in which Jesus says that when he's gone, Peter will take over from him. That conversation is not reported by Paul or the authors of "Mark" and "Luke", who preceded "Matthew" or by "John", writing later.
There is no mention of Peter becoming first bishop of Rome or of all his successors achieving the same status. That is entirely an invention of the RC Church.
There is no evidence that Peter ever went near Rome and plenty that shows that he didn't.
I can expand on that if you like.

//Well what kind of movement that Jesus and his followers were seeking to establish.//
The general attitude and understanding is relative to God’s kingdom, is too confusing for you naoim.
It is something abstract, well some people know about a kingdom and pray, but that is about as far as it goes.
Some think about God’s kingdom as expect to go to heaven and in that way realize it.
Some expect man to set up the Kingdom on earth and many expect the world to be converted to the gospel and then God’s kingdom will be established.
Still others will contend that Christ will appear in visible form and then set up God’s kingdom on the earth. Yet these very same ones believe that they are going to heaven. Some even think God’s kingdom is within.
Yes a confused and unsettled picture indeed, with each person having his own opinion, they will live and die with their own conclusions.
But that is not what the Bible teach, nor does it mean that there will be no such thing as a movement that Jesus establish for his true followers. (Galatians 3:16)
