A report in The Mail online states that people who are religious or spiritual have thicker brains. Surely this can't be so?

I think to have a spiritual side to your nature is a help in understanding both yourself and the world you live in - that in turn may help fend off the depths of severe depression, but not being qualified cannot be sure.
Well, the religious people I have known all throughout my life thus far are the most gossipy, self centered, nasty, critical and downright awful people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. So they obviously have 'thicker skins' !
-- answer removed --
the religious people I have known have all been kind, understand and loving, and do not spend time on websites pouring bile on those who dare to disagree with them.

Perhaps the ungodly should spend more time in church building up their cortices, rather than on AB building up their righteousness.
/pouring bile/ that's new on AB..:o)
I do know, for a fact, that when God asked them 'what kind of heads do you want?'. They thought he said beds and asked for big, soft ones. Does that help?
I don't think the 'ungodly' are any more spiteful, vindictive, or prone to schadenfreude than those of a religious disposition. All the indications point to the contrary since they don't normally give way to those fits of pique which afflict the theistically inclined. Have a happy and full new year Sandy.
You know Sandy that few people only believe in any research if it suits them.
Keyplus, are you saying that people are inclined to believe that which supports their preconceptions? even religious people? I'm shocked.
Purple-Popple, you have just come across as a very nice person yourself. Perhaps they need 'thicker skins' to put up with the likes of that.
How do you explain this ?http://www.salon.com/2013/09/20/are_religious_people_more_depressed_partner/
For some reason this site is not coming up .
I'll try again:

Depressing isn't it?
Perhaps it is just that people that can't come to terms with reality either take up religion or get depressed or both.
Just goes to show how one study will say one thing and another study something else. Do these studies fall under science?

//You know Sandy that few people only believe in any research if it suits them. //

We know what you were trying to say there but you completely changed the meaning by saying "few", whereas "some" would have made more sense.

Taking things which are supportive of our own views is only natural. Funny thing though, the bible and Koran does not support the beliefs of the atheists here, yet they constantly quote from them, to highlight all the aspects of religion they dislike/disbelieve.

Is that an exception that proves your rule?

Hypognosis – Thanks for correcting me. After all English is not my mother tongue or first language and therefore I am allowed to make mistakes here and there. I will try to rephrase it in a better way, but if I am still wrong then at least people know what I meant to say and that is more important.

Some people will never believe in a scientific research if that does not suit their own belief even though when they always talk about modern science and scientific research.
Hypo, I think atheists quote from holy texts in order to demonstrate their inconsistencies, since a book of 'truth' cannot by it's nature have any inconsistencies.
Don't worry KP, I'm sure that we know perfectly well what you mean.
Thicker maybe...not so sure about the brains !
