The answer is - they can make it what ever they want to. They never disclose how they arrive at the answer and they change the method each time to keep you guessing and increasing their profits by constantly phoning in. It may be as simple as kosoro says (37 = 1(an apple) + 12 + 12 + 6 + 6) but it is highly unlikely to be so. They might count 12 as being 12, 1 and 2. I have also read suggestions that they also interpret Roman numerals - so the D in 'red apples' could represent 500 more apples. It is also open to question whether they subtract the ones eaten or not? There are so many variables that it is simply a lottery and you can be sure that it will not be correctly guessed until the closing minutes of the program.
My advice:- don't waste your money - leave well alone.
