Okay, before I forget how it works ...

(coz I was trying to follow the argument in the pub)

England are winning by 11 points.

After 80 minutes and a few seconds, England are awarded a penalty.

Game over, and the referee blows for the end.

EXCEPT ... !!!

If England had been 2 points ahead, and Wales had been awarded the penalty, they could have taken it, because the team awarded the penalty is allowed to take it, even if the 80 minutes are otherwise up, and the ball is not dead until after the penalty is taken.

(that's the bit I'm not sure about)

So, the thing is, could England have taken the penalty if they wanted to???

Yes JJ - that's why on the magic eye in tennis, if the ball touches down on the line, it's in. Rugby's different.
Just seen the news and spotted the foot on the line - missed it the first time - shame.
Thanks for the corroboration, shoota :-)
Helen Keller would have spotted the foot on the line.

My grand father told me about Helen Keller.....

I love it when threads take a slightly surreal turn.
Helen Keller would also have been a better choice of referee in the 1966 World Cup Football Final.
What happened then Warty?
Ask your grand father shoota lad.
Thought I was.....
I'm a great grand father.
Helen Keller would have spotted the handball that led to the Germans' equaliser.
I was there, I saw it, LOL (I didn't see Helen Keller in the crowd)
So was I. I was the one in the West Ham bobble hat!
