Turned on my laptop this morning and can only get a blank screen with a message saying C:\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is unavailable.

Can anyone help?

Anyone?
Hmm. Firstly Tills are you sure that the machine wasn't updating and had not completed? Can you access settings by pressing the windows key or right clicking the windows icon bottom left if it is there? If so go into settings (cog wheel) and look in update and security. In there look if there are outstanding updates . If not look for the recovery option. This could get a bit techie thereafter Tills.
After that Tills we are going to try a full shutdown and reboot from scratch.

Togo, neither the windows icon not the key are responding. Just the egg timer flicking on and off intermittently.
Sounds to me Tills that a Windows update installation isn't completed yet, or it is not completed successfully. Have you tried switching it off and waiting a while then booting up again?
Question Author
Yes, Togo. I switched it off and took out the power cable for about ten minutes.
I switched my Windows laptop on yesterday and it had updates. It is annoying when the screen is black as you are not sure what is happening if anything. It took a while so it may help to wait and see. If egg timer is flickering on and off then it is more likely it is updating.
Is this a laptop Tills?
Yes Pusscat there has been a very big upgrade released just this week. I think that you need to give it some time Tills.
Daft thing is when you are online and using the devices you can set and upgrade loading and still use the machine, but if an upgrade launches whilst you are not online you cannot open it up.
Question Author
Yes, Togo. A Lenovo ideapad 330.
Thanks to both of you for trying to help. OG maybe I need to be a bit more patient. :-(
Question Author
Sorry. Pussycat. I mistook you for OG.
I'm using my phone and it's a pain.
If you have time to wait for an answer .. Google 'windows 10 updates causing problems'
Microsoft are constantly issuing updates that once installed may cause you issues. MS themselves are actively advising Win 10 users to delete certain recent updates.
Question Author
I turned on the laptop at 8.00am and so far...nowt!
No worries Tilly. Hope it is an update or if not hope you get it sorted.
Question Author
Alav, I'll have to do that on my phone. Thanks for that.
Question Author
I'm going to take Tilly out and keep my fingers crossed for it to have sorted itself out by the time I get back. Shall I switch it off or leave it on?
You've said that the Windows key isn't responding but have you tried pressing it together with E?

If that opens Windows Explorer, I think I can provide you with a solution but there's not much point me typing it all out if Win+E doesn't work.
try booting into safe mode
Question Author
Buen, that has opened a window that says file explorer but the Windows unavailable message is still there.
