The tourist areas on the central Lakes will be AWFUL in August with crowds of people and cars and coaches. Avoid Windermere, Ableside, Grasmere etc.
Can I suggest you go round to the WEST of the Lake District. It takes longer to get there, but for that reason the area has far less tourists.
If you are entering from the South then you drive round the south of lakes Windermere and Coniston and then you could stay in the quieter west side.
Here you can see beautiful lakes like Wastwater, Ennerdale, and Crummock Water in relative peace and quiet.
I have stayed at Ravenglass in the past, also at Boot, a lovely village near Eskdale.
I have stayed at a self catering cottage on Fisherground Farm near Boot.
