Look back at Europe 100 years ago 1916. Middle of the first world war, millions being killed over petty political disputes so 'alien' to modern thinking that we can not understand how they arose. Dozens of small independent states constantly disputing . A hundred years later we are united to a degree that was unthinkable then. In another 100 years things will have moved on again, people will look back on 2016 in much the same way we look back on 1916.
Greater unity is going to happen , the alternative is unthinkable and unsustainable.
There is a saying 'A house which is divided against itself can not stand'
( or words to that effect) Always been proved true so far.

the concept of a borderless world is at odds with environmentalism. at present immigration/customs controls and vast tracts of ocean prevent the arrival of invasive species. eliminate one and the other will no longer afford any protection.

would it be morally right to permit environmental destruction for the sake of a political utopian ideal for humans?

Exactly TTT, i too have mentioned similar.

The EU is flawed because it keeps sovereign countries. The only way it will work is 1 tax regime, one Government, on benefit scheme, one helath scheme etc etc. Countries need to become states and surrender their sovereignty, until they do the EU will continue to fail.
