Can anyone recommend a small but affective one of these.

We have a George - wouldn't use anything else. It can be used as a normal vac and can clean hard floors as well as carpets.

I have a Vax Rapide Ultra and it does a pretty descent job

I also have a Vax Rapide Ultra & it is very efficient & the carpets are almost dry. Well worth the initial outlay.
