Tumble Dryer

Had a very pleasant surprise this morning. I have always felt guilty for using my tumble dryer as I thought it would be expensive. I had smart meters fitted this morning, and have been given a monitor thingy which tells me how much per hour I am using. 8p for my dryer!!!

My Mum gave me her unwanted tumble-dryer in March. She'd only used it 3 times and wanted to do something else with the space it took up.

I was pleased because it meant that I could get rid of my old inefficient/expensive dryer........I wasn't quite so thrilled when I realised that it was one of the 'products under recall' and I'll have to wait until March next year for the engineer to come and make it *safe*.
So, I'm back to drying bedding on the bannisters...... :o(

I've got nowhere to put it Helly - apart from the garage (in order to fit it in the garage, the shed needs building so that the garden stuff can be moved in there, and there is no way I am building a shed - it would look like something a 4 year old knocked together). If the current washing machine breaks down, I WILL buy a combi.

Hellywell... I find the costs, which your Monitor is producing, are somewhat suspect. 8p is unlikely to buy a single unit of Electricity and a two Kilowatt Tumbly Dryer will use two units in an hour; a Three kilowatt machine will use 3 units in an hour. What price per unit are you actually paying ?.

I use mine on cold in the hope things shrink less. No idea if that actually works, but it seems to.

I wouldn't get a combo Barmaid. I had one once and hated it. I ended up not usomg the dryer at all. It was 25 years ago though ! I couldn't do without my dryer.

A 'Combo' is ideal if space is limited. Admittedly, it is only able to carry-out one function at a time (Washing or Drying). However the initial financial outlay is a lot less than purchasing two machines and the end results of washing and drying are the same. Also costs for electricity are, in all probability, going to be the same.

I am hoping that hellywelly 4 replies to my earlier posting when I asked .. "What price per unit are you actually paying " ?.

Hello Hans, sorry, I had to look it up. 9.797 kWh, 16.422 standing charge per day. It's with Eon.

I didn't like a combi I had, much prefer separate ones.

I love my tumble dryer, I tumble dry pretty much everything! I'm not sure how much it cost to run but my utility bills aren't high, though it is just me.

We have an integrated Tumble Dryer and use all the time in the colder months.......if dry and warm/hot weather, leave them on the washing line in the garden in the sunshine, if out.

Washing Machine and Dishwasher also are integrated, so handy as you can't seem 'em.

I wouldn't go for the combi either, it's quite limiting if washing for a family. Get a condensing dryer and you can put it where ever you like. Ours is in the cupboard with the boiler.

I have a combi, never used the dryer though. If I can't line dry I put it on an airer in the spare bedroom. Only bought dryer as a just in case job!

Sorry hellywelly that I hadn't seen your latest posting until now. I am just having a quick look into AB prior to going off to bed and will try to answer your question.

If you are paying 9.797p per kWh, then I would say that's good and at that rate I am thinking perhaps you are on 'dual tariff' (Gas and Electric from EON)

Anyway, as it is inconceivable that your dryer has a heater of less than two kilowatts, the minimum cost per hour would be 19.594p. Consequently, I am unable to comprehend the figure you have given in your original posting of 8 pence per hour.

Anyway I don't know exactly what 'monitor thingy' you are using. Nevertheless, whatever it is, its my guess that it is giving you an average hourly amount for all the electricity which you are using. Some hours you will be spending very little and others a lot more.
