I admit to getting easily irritated but wish people would read AB questions thoroughly before submitting an answer. I logged on recently and was pleased to get a reply to a question, but the responder hadn't read the question properly so the answer didn't help. Am I being intolerant or do others feel the same?

some of us are lucky to have nick-names on this site, I think of it as a mark of affection and not laziness by the person replying.

There is a lovely couple at end of my road who have the most wonderful garden, they are in their late 80's, next time I see them, I'll try to remember to ask about your plant problem. They are always ready to give advice

Yes Mazie, a garden where nothing flowers isn't really a garden in my book. My daughter recently bought a house with the same problem. It took three weekends to clear it and now we have the greatest gift a gardener can have, a blank canvas. I have three greenhouses full of plants for her, we have dug in 60 tons of well rotted manure, the soil was awful, and planting will start next spring. She is so excited, and so am I.
Absolutely Sam. That's what we had in the beds and borders here, a blank canvass. We were fortunate in as much as the soil is excellent, some of the best I've worked with. You are both going to have so much fun with the new garden. I had a large brick and hard wood greenhouse that the husband built at the old house (it was original built as a summerhouse at the bottom of the garden and then I got the gardening bug!) I grew hundreds of plants from seeds and cuttings every year. I tried to sell them to friends and neighbours but couldn't bring myself to ask for money. Ended up giving them all away. As a matter of interest what do you use for your spring feed and when planting new plants? I've always used Fish, blood and bone and been very happy with it.

We use the same on low bush forming perennials, like Astrantia and Geraniums, but very sparingly. For the tall perennials we use a very light top dressing of a nitrogen feed. I also find that a liquid tomato type feed will extend flowering on some plants, trial and error. We have what we call the spare bed where we grow extra plants to fill in if we lose something, I hate gaps. The bed has plants in large tomato pots with the bottoms cut out and sunk into the bed. Makes moving them easier.
Saplesam I think we all would have loved to see photos of your garden. If you ever find a way of managing to post some on here that would be lovely.
Sapelsam, sorry !

I'm going into the garden so I'll check back later. I did have the video on YouTube but somebody claimed copyright on the music so I had to take it down.
Same for me with the FBB and I also use tomato feed for the summer feeding. Good idea with the tubs, going to try that Sam..

hope this works...I have very few pictures of the old garden but this is on the decking just outside the french windows...The Brugmansia, I grew from a cutting.
