Watching an old episode of "To the Manor Born" with MrF yesterday, and De Vere was holding a hank of yarn, whilst his mum wound it into a ball.
Anyone else remember doing that for their mum/gran?
When I got older, and had no one to hold it, I had 2 dining chairs back to back to hold the hank, and stood on one to wind.

Yep, I remember sitting on floor holding the hank and Mother winding and saying things like
'keep it loose'
'just hold it!'

Cuddlyone!! you're impossible !!
(thankfully lol)
good memories thats all xxx
The worst was wool which was being recycled, having been unravelled from an old garment. It was always so kinked that it got tangled all the time.
Remember sista washing a woollen jumper and the two of us trying to wring and wring the water out of it for her to wear that night. I'm sure it was still soaking.
atalanta, oh gosh, yep!
Mother would unpick a hand-made jumper and it was nigh on impossible to get the wool to behave!

(must find a nickname for you, atalanta sounds so formal! x)
And your nan would let you have a bit of her wool so you could play cat's cradles.
I did that so often for the aunties, Ferlew.......when I had to do it on my own I tried using my feet but decided it'd be easier to have some children and train them up...... ;-)

Bit drastic that Gness.
Re the recycled wool, my great gran used to have hand knits returned to her each year, she either pulled them right out and re used the wool, or knitted on some extra at the cuff and hem. (Hopefully in the same colour as the original garment).

Should have added, returned to her, as we grew out of them.
Yes I remember holding the wool for my Mum.
I did that as a lad, helped make me the man I am today. :)
Oh yes!! Seemed to spend half my time holding hanks of yarn. You get quite good at wiggling the thumb at just the right place. Didn't your arms ache like mine? Yes, the unpicked wool was the worst, even if it had been washed. Butt, hey!, that was how you got a new jumper or cardi.

I'm remembering that I sewed almost everything for us years ago (including the girls' school uniforms) and worked my way up to sport jackets and trousers for my husband. I still have my trusty Bernina, but have only used it for cushion-covers etc.. recently. Perhaps I'll start again and do my own designer clothes again. Mmmmm.. Thanks for the idea.
