Loft Insulation Got Damp

We had snow come in the loft and it thawed into the insulation. Will it dry? Or would we have to replace? Worrying about mould, mildew and rot where it might be sitting against timbers.

How damp? Could you get a heater up there?

No expert but I'd have thought a heater up there for a while would dry it out quickly enough. I suppose quantity of snow might be relevant.

What is the insulation material? Fibre glass is unlikely to rot or cause mould to cultivate. "Natural" materials may do so. Is the insulation sitting on the ceiling joists and therefor in contact with the ceiling below or is it under the tiles or slates? If it is on the ceiling joists I would be tempted to roll it back whilst it dries, so as not to damage or stain the ceiling below. If it is under the roof you will need to determine whether the insulation is integral with any felt or membrane laid under the slates or tiles. Not an easy fix if it is. Perhaps just wait for it to dry and keep an eye on any Water dripping.

There should be no problem with rot, mould etc if the roofspace is well ventilated. If you've had snow coming in, then it suggests that there is no felt under the slates/tiles. In which case, the roofspace would have enough ventilation to allow the insulation to dry out naturally.

If the insulation is very wet, then I agree with Togo in rolling it back until dry. Most likely no cause for worry though.
