I doubt if the scanners at airports can see their contents. Are they a security risk?

I think modern scanners can detect liquids, even through aluminium. And if it is detected, the staff appear to quite enjoy making sure you are delayed and inconvenienced.
Yes, it happened to me. I won't let it happen again...
But feel free to risk it.

Oh, yes. They are very common in China and other parts of Asia.
Also, China has hot water dispensers on both sides of security.
Might be best send it through security separately, like the liquids and laptops, so that you can show it is empty.
If they detect it in your bag, they might try to inconvenience you.

That looks like a brilliant "holiday" walk Sandy. Can be done in 6 days but I hope that you are going to spin it out and have some quality leisure time. Maia,(perhaps unless you head for Lavra) Vila do Conde, Esponsend, Viana, Caminha, Valenca, looks wonderful. Hope the sun shines and a cool breeze refreshes you.
