Do all small packages going from UK to Denmark get opened by Customs?

No, I'm not a drug dealer - I just have some small (irreplaceable but not particularly valuable) items to send, and it seems to be a safe-ish way of sending them, i.e. by Royal Mail.

Any thoughts?

I wouldn't imagine all of them would be.

Maybe they are scanned/x-rayed and dubious ones are opened?

Hopefully someone will be along with a concrete answer.

Remember to insure your parcel and ask for it to be signed for just to ease your mind?

As Denmark is within the EU (where the free movement of goods is required by legislation) I would assume that the policy there is the same as here in the UK. i.e. not all packages are opened but 'selective checks' are carried out:

Most of the packages I've received from other EU countries have arrived unopened but one or two have arrived with an "opened by Customs" note inside them and/or a "resealed after Customs examination" label on the outside. I would expect things to be much the same with regard to packages from the UK arriving in Denmark.

This is something that's been troubling me for a while. I have a collection of medals, Masonic, cycling, and military. No Victoria Crosses, no gold - although some silver. These have been passed down to me as the 'male' line in our family, but we are childless, and when we die, the only possible interest in them will be from our Danish relations' children.

We're too old to climb on a plane and take them to Denmark. One solution would be a known courier (hard to find as we have few relations, either).

So we wondered whether sending the 3 dozen or so medals a few at a time might be a way of doing it.

What I don't want is a light-fingered custom's man (of either sex or nationality) spying a shiny object and snaffling it!

Don't fancy a trip to Copenhagen, do you Alba (or Chris?)

The thought of a trip to Copenhagen is very nice, however, I have no passport and I doubt Chris would leave his poody-cats :-)

Perhaps, try the water first by sending a few of least value (which is silly as all those medals have emotional value) - Meant monetary value.

Simply send them using 'International Tracked and Signed', ensuring that the value of each package doesn't exceed £250 (and remembering to pay the extra £2.50 that gets the compensation level upped from £50 to £250):

Yes, fair enough, and as I didn’t go away for the 19 years of my cats’ lives, I fully understand your comments, Alba (and Chris’s love).

I’ve also been looking at a firm called Rand Logistics who look very professional - I could send the whole thing, case included, in one hit, the only limit on insurance being my ability to pay.

The likelihood of a customs official pilfering from a package in Denmark is something I would think lower than in the UK, so approach it on that basis. You should know that in some countries postal items posted in the UK are delivered abroad by GLS courier service. This is because Royal mail removes the item from the postal system before leaving the UK and hands it over to their courier arm GLS. This means that the item cannot be delivered to some postal addresses, most notably P.O. Boxes. In such cases the item is returned to the sender (if known) as undeliverable.

Thanks IJ. They are incredibly cheap - £15 to £20 for 10 kg, and reviews are ‘mixed’.

Post Office want £175, and I know that paying peanuts doesn’t necessarily mean you get monkeys, but I would hate grandfather’s penny-farthing racing medals to go astray!

Could you buy a cheap airline ticket for one of your relatives to come over to the UK and collect them?
