As above - I truly know nothing about Credit Cards only that you buy things and then pay it off every month eg.

What I would like to know - can you get a Credit Card from a bank you don't even have an account with. Ta

sorry to come back again. -

When I look at the variety of cards - they have given me an assumption of the credit they will lend me - there is nowhere I can ask for say like more. What they allow you to have comes from the CC companies. Is that right.
Yes, when you have had the card for a while you can ask for an increase in the credit limit, very often they give you an increase whether you've asked or not.

No reason you can't have two or three cards
Question Author
thanks HC - as I said I am only looking at the alternatives - cc will be used about Feb.

also - when I eventually select a card - will they allow me to pay them back by standing order/direct debit
Yes, by direct debit is the usual method of payment
Question Author
ok - thanks again.
We pay the min payment by DD but usually clear it in full. The min payment is set up just in case we forget or are away etc, so no charges will ever be added.

You can ask them to not increase your limit. When we took ours out (listening to hc's advise) they offered us 15k but I lowered it to 5k and asked them to not increase it.

when you get your credit card - how soon do start paying off it.

also what is the waiting time to receive one.

If you start using the credit card immediately for some shopping and pay it off each month, when you need the increased limit they are more likely to agree as they can see you are a good risk.
Usually takes about 10 days to get the card and USUALLY you have six weeks to make the payment after you first use it. Different cards have different terms and conditions but you it should tell on the application.
