Just received a letter from my new (and former) optician to tell me that after careful consideration they will no longer be offering eye tests. I did not make this up!

Independent as far as I am aware. The woman who runs it diagnosed me with severe cataracts then proceeded to prescribe me totally unsuitable glasses.

Are you sure they don't mean that they will no longer be offering YOU eye tests but will offer them to everyone else?

You would think that if you have "severe cataracts" she would have referred you to an ophthalmologist.

Or at least offered the loan of a lifejacket.

You probably need your cataracts removing before having another eye test.Either go to another optician for advice or see your doctor to make a hospital appointment.

get your sight double-checked somewhere else to be sure she's right about the cataracts; if you've got them, get your name down for an operation. (Two, actually.) This is said to be the NHS's most successful operation, and I recommend it.

it is a like a Hardy novel, simples

you know when elizabeth jane comes back as peggy sue
or lulu-bell and then they find that in fact the original died and Mum had another just to er fill in or something
