On BBC podcasts that I listen to here, there is always a gov.uk/livinginspain anouncement saying to get a residence permit ( I have ) change your driving licence ( I have a Spanish one) and check your passport is valid . Yikes ! Mine is valid until 2024, they won't stop me at CDG on our way to Japan and say non, non, non will they ?

You will be fine - you will only need 6 months remaining on your UK passport to travel to an eu country after brexit and japan only requires that a British passport is valid for the duration of your stay.
Nah - people travel multi-national with every which kind of passport. As long as you've got one you'll be fine.
