Today is the closing date for EU citizens to register for settled status in the UK, though there will be some discretion over late applicants. When the scheme started a cououple of years ago official estimates suggested around 3.7 million (non-Irish) EU citizens were in the UK. So far 5.6 million have registered - so the official estimate was out by nearly 2 million, 50%. That's a pretty big rounding error.

Nice to be popular - and from what I hear, despite all the scaremongering, British people are still living and working in Europe too. Who'd a thunk?
That statement always makes me laugh, not every immigrant that comes here works for the NHS but every immigrant that comes here will use it at some point.
three million - schmillion, does it matter what the number is? Poles less keen than a few years ago an account of further Russian sabre rattling - ignored by Trump
Putin saying - you lucky poles you can be Russian serfs again, roll up has had a deadening effect on re-imnigration

And many estimates put the true number at around eight million.
Whatever it is, the authorities in the UK have absolutely no idea how many people live here. So when they say "x% of the adult population have received their first Covid jab" that is probably out by about 10%.
