I've watched coverage of this terrible case tonight on ITV and BBC, but neither of the reports or the information in the above link explain why it has taken nearly five years for the case to come to court. Does anyone know?

Pre-Covid, there were already very long waits for a Crown Court date, largely due to cuts in the number of actual courts but with the situation further exacerbated by many barristers pulling out of criminal aid work because they simply couldn't live on what it paid them. The need to keep courtrooms Covid secure then added even further to those delays.
