How do you find out if somebody is in jail or not??Only a vague idea as to which court the matter was dealt with and hearsay that they were given a custodial sentence.

Ask his mum.

why would I do that? I don't even know the person. This is a question for somebody else who is trying to find out some info but I know that they do not know this persons family.
You could try phoning the local prisons and asking for him. But I would be surprised if they tell you. After all, if he wants people to know he's in prison he will tell them. If he doesn't want people to know it's wrong for the authorities to blab to anyone who phones asking for him.
Court cases are ofter reported in the local paper. If it is local to you you could pop down the local library and see if they have back copies of the paper.

Ok,this guy was taken to court for trashing her house, fined and ordered to pay costs. He never bothered and vanished.Later she heard on the radio that he had been involved in a hit and run and the onther driver died.It went to the local court she believes and she then heaad rumours that he was in fact jailed.
Ask his sister, perhaps?

after several hours of googling I have found that you can track any person to the jail that they are in if you email the name to:

Glad you found something :) Sorry, would've helped if I'd come on earlier.

Did you get the info you wanted?

Found this...http://www.hmprisonservice.gov.uk/adviceandsup port/keepingintouch/locationservice/.

Not sure if this is what you found but he needs to consent to disclosure about his whereabouts.

Would he do this? If not have you tried googling his name or archives of local papers online?

It may come up with an article if there was a death involved.

If he is refusing to pay costs and your friend wants the court order enforcing then maybe the lawyer who acted could find out or maybe even the CAB if you asked them nicely, they may have more persuasive power.

Or is it just she wants to know he is safely behind bars and away from her?

Hi Jenna - a bit of both I think. If we google his name it does infact come up with the news story and the court he was sentenced at - he got 3 years - so she knows he is put away but now wonders what will evr happens to these costs he owes? Probably never get them I suppose.
I'll see if I can find out the position for you. This is a general guide to enforcing court orders though...http://www.winckworths.co.uk/downloads/File/en forcement2006.pdf#search=%22enforcing%20court% 20costs%20defendant%20prison%22
