Double Barrelled Names

Why? Just why? I can understand if its a posh family member marrying another posh family member like the Ponsonby-Smythes, but so many ordinary people do it now. Pointless.

Perhaps the rise in double-barrelled surnames is due to couples combining their surnames when children arrive and parents aren't wed as well as same-sex couples combining theirs when they do wed
