Have a GP appointment in couple of weeks as, out of the blue, I started getting "a noise" in my right ear (couple of days after having an injection in my right shoulder for freezing shoulder, tho' don't see the relevance of that), difficult to describe but is affecting sleep. "White noise" I guess. A pharmacist & an audiologist (at an optician / hearing place) have both checked my ears - was hoping to avoid going to the GP - both said no wax, looks fine if the canals are quite small, & suggested seeing my GP with a view to getting an ENT referral.
The GP has told me to use either a decongestant nasal spray, or a steroid nasal spray until my appointment.
Why ? I'm not congested. And which ?

pastafreak, a saline nasal spray, yeah ?
I did ask the receptionist who called re the appointment if she could be a bit more more specific, maybe with a brand name, but she couldn't, not surprisingly. Was planning on speaking to the pharmacist I saw originally, guess that's the plan now then.
ladybirder, lol (sorry :) ). I do need to get my hair cut as it happens - ha - but ironically I was told not to lie on my right side (because of my shoulder) so hair in my ear wouldn't be a problem. Mind you, after going to the 1st physio session today I've been told I can now sleep on my right. If I can get comfortable. But not a crackle, more, just ... noise. Can't explain. A hum, a whistle ... a humming whistle ? Not sure. And it's affecting my sleep more than the shoulder pain *doh*
pastafreak, my other 'alf had a spider in his ear. But it didn't last over 3 weeks :( Strange actually. I've had a really itchy, hot right leg (but only at night, when I lie on my left side, don't feel it any other time) for about the same length of time. I noticed what looked like a very small, white line on my leg, which now looks like 2 tiny bumps. Fang like. I haven't mentioned that to any - "professionals" *gulp*
An unexplained noise in your ear is an elusive ailment with no ENT-endorsed remedy. Your GP is likely eliminating nasal congestion as a contributing cause. As mentioned above, use saline spray to avoid side effects. Perhaps Sudafed Natural Relief.

Back a few months ago I had a very minor nose bleed...I get them occasionally. On reading up as one does, a recommended preventative was baseline for moisture and a saline spray to keep passages clear. I had a pack of Sterimar spray that I'd not used. It cleared up the persistent drippy nose I'd been experiencing.
