If a desktop is reset to factory settings, is the data lost, or can it ever be recovered?

there is usually an option to keep user files when the reset is carried out. I assume we are talking windows n?

It does exactly wha it says on the tin - the PC is set to exactly how it was when it was delivered to you.

Except the drive hasn't been overwritten so data would be recoverable if removed from the machine and accessed by another with a recovery programme.

Hi Chris, the reset has already been done by my tekkie.

I got the blue screen of death, and it thwarted all his considerable skills in unlocking, so he advises this was the only option.

If the data is recoverable,I am happy to give PC World a shot at it.

Any advice please?

I assume you have no back up? Are you on onedrive or similar?

I have all the important info backed up, I would like to get some other stuff back, but it's not essential.

I'll look at options, if there are any - ?

You need to ask your tekkie about what he did.  If he formatted the drive, any data on it will almost certainly have been lost.  However if he simply did an 'on top' installation of Windows, there's a decent chance that the data is recoverable.

You could also try installing and running the free version of Recuva, which should find any recoverable files:
