Somewhere I vaguely remember that someone said something along the lines of "If God hadn't created man, man would have had to create God." I have searched everywhere and can't find the exact quotation, so plese can anyone help: who said it, and what are the correct words?

"If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him." The words are those of the French writer, Voltaire. (Of course, he actually said them in French, but I'll leave you to find the translation yourself!)

Thank you so much, Quizmaster; you know how irritating it is when you just can't grasp something so nearly within your reach. Now I can carry on the argument that I was involved in three weeks ago, that had to be halted while I found the quotation!!
