Red, yellow, blue. Or as our masters in Brussels have now decreed, brown, black and grey.

It's ironic that electrical installations in Britain now have to comply with the rest of Europe when our installations have always been done to far superior standards. Anyone who's ever stayed in a Spanish or Greek hotel will testify to that.

depends which direction you need the motor to turn and talking of harmonized colours (black,brown and grey} from a sparkies point of view they are a nightmare to distinquish apart in low light conditions give me red yell and blue anyday

Well said matt1e, i'm a sparky and it's annoying when you forget which way the BBG goes as i'm so used to RYB and now blue is the neutral colour when it used to be black.

I heard in the news a sparky from up north somewhere wired a new MCB board up and forget that blue was now neutral and connected the other end to the mains and when he connected the neutral up on a sub circuit it killed him due to it being live.

Anyways your answer to the question lissylou is it doesn't matter which way the phase rotation goes as long as any three phase machinery or motors are going the correct way before putting into service....

yes disco im a sparky too and although I still think red/black is a better colour combo to use ie red for danger i'm kind of used to brown/blue now though I will never get used to brown/black/grey and it pees you off having to sleeve the grey with blue and grey/black with brown all the time for the likes of smoke alarms and 2-way lighting circuits etc
I think the introduction off harmonized colours was less europe and more to do with identifying circuits wired post part-p as the timing of legislation seemed to coincide quite nicely
