Sorry for sounding negative but unless you have a diagnosis, you may be getting the wrong advice here and end up making it worse not better.
Best to go and see your doctor first.
Go to a qualified chiropractor or osteopath who specialises in such areas. You are more likely to be effectively treated for the root cause of your problem, than by a doctor who is likely to recommend painkillers, which only trat the symptoms, not the cause.
Even simpler - buy one of those curved pillows to support your neck while asleep and give the relevant muscles a chance to relax. (but still while you are waiting for the appointment!)
I agree with brawburd and strongly advise against a chiropractor or osteopath as your first port of call as they both managed to increase my neck pain.
Two possibilities - stress, or general wear and tear - but any pain is the body's warning that something is wrong, so please go to your GP as soon as possible.
