I keep seeing people starting their replies with 'lol'...
can someone please tell me what it means.

It's a ridiculous bit of text-speak which supposedly either means what the answer above suggests or "laughing out loud".
If it's laugh out loud, it is presumably an instruction to the reader. Has anyone ever laughed out loud to order? If it's laughing out loud, then the person who writes it is presumably telling the reader what he/she (the writer) is doing.
How likely is that? They may well have laughed out loud when they first saw the funny item, but - now that time has passed and they are typing a reply - how likely is it that they are still laughing out loud?
Accordingly, unless it does mean lots of love, it is either absurd or a lie. Please, never - ever - use it yourself, Spreeny!

Being as though emoticons are (mercifully) not available to express gales of laughter, I think LOL's very apt.

the French also use the lol textspeak.....although they know it has something to do with laughing or love, it doesn't translate well...laugh is rire and love is amour!
