I am looking to buy a 3 litre diesel a8 but only do approximately 7000 miles /annum .Would the performance of the engine be affected ?

Probably not, although all cars like a run every now and then. If you're only doing 7000 miles, have you checked how long it will take you to recoup the additional purchase price of Diesel compared to petrol?
