Cananyone suggest any GENUINE working at home opportunities? I was thinking along the lines of transcribing work, hosting/policing chat rooms etc? Or anything else you can think of, but not the "chain letter" type of thing you see on lamposts!! Looking for something sensible and genuine.

If you have any language skills, you can work as a technical translator from home, but you need to establish yourself and build up contacts.
One sees these adverts for proof reading....I have always been wary of these because they are selling a course, not guaranteeing work. But if you could offer proof reading and again, build up contacts, that might work.
Exam marking is done from home - in fact you get sacked if you are caught taking the scripts anywhere else.
li ol lady - that proof reading sounds interesting - i am a voracious reader anyway!

How would one "start" to build up contacts - I'd have no idea?

Would it be an idea to write to a puiblishing house to ask if they would consider sending work to proof read?
I work from home, I have an eBay business.

You need to know your product(s) inside out and have good contacts.
evedawn don't think it's that simple. You need to have done a proofreading course and at least generally show that you are competent as there are certain marks and symbols used in this business (I know as I have done a course - just for interest rather than employment) Publishing houses have lists of 'qualified' prooofreaders that they use.
Just noticed an extra o in my proofreaders bit - didn't proofread it properly!!
My sister works part-time at a University as a secretary to one of the Professors. She only does part-time cos of childcare being so expensive etc.... But she does a lot of proof-reading for the University, which she can do at home, whilst baby sleeps. They are normally 50-60 page documents and a bit hard-going depending on the subject matter, but she gets 30 for each one she does and managed to cram 5 in last week!
I would suggest contacting your local University and see if they have any of this sort of work available.
Hope that helps?
Proof reading is largely done on technical and scientific papers and books these days - to make sure the citations and technical aspects are correct and so on. The reader needs to be highly qualified in the specialised field.

There is very sophisticated software that will proof read novels for spelling and grammar, rendering human proof readers more or less obsolete for novels.

Thanks for your answers everyone ... so ... anything other than proof reading???
EK have you any experience with sewing? I know that there are companies in the UK with bespoke designs that need hand sewers but can't find any link.
Try this site too, just to give you some general incentive

at the bottom of each page you can move to the next page, and on about the 4th there is one about UK utility companies, I would be wary of some of these if they ask for money as an up front stake tho.

Some Call Centre work can be done from home. The Call Centre just get a Hub installed in your home for you to use. Car Insurance companies also use this type of employee as they don't have to provide office space.
I work as a team leader for Deya, which is the company which delivers Yellow Pages (as well as some other directories) throughout the country. While the work I do is only for a few weeks each year (as the various directories are published for this part of East Anglia), Deya need route checkers all year round (because there are always directories being delivered somewhere in the country).

Route checkers phone people to check that they've received their directories. (i.e. they're making sure that people like me, and the teams who work under me, are doing their jobs properly). All calls are routed via Deya's call system, which is free to the route checkers. (i.e. route checkers don't have to pay for the calls).

Unlike most 'work from home' jobs, it's definitely not a scam, so perhaps it might be worth looking into?
