aog: Yes it is exactly to do with that. It happens all the time back in the States when he's playing there. It's almost the equivalent of a signature tune, so to speak (or BOO!!)

Perhaps when his name was announced on the tannoy, the crowd thought it was an instruction?

Derby County used to have a dutch goalkeeper called Mart Poom. When I first saw him play the whole crowd seemed to boo him every time he got the ball - it was a while before I realised they were saying his name in a sort of booing fashion - 'Poooooom'. Similar thing to the above golfer.
