Can I use granulated sugar in place of caster sugar in baking recipes?

I have done but ground it down a little with a pestle and mortar.

Short answer is yes.

I dropped my mortar yesterday and it broke.

Put the granulated sugar in a blender or food processor and whizz it for a few seconds.
