Are you sure about all three letters? Only 10 words fit that pattern and none seems to answer the clue...

The questions around this are:

22a town square rebuilt in la paz (5) = plaz(a) 

24a sailor seen round stern of boat, hunting for vermin (7) = RATLIN(E) 

26A. french cheeses said to give you wind (6).= BREEZ(E). 

these give me ?A?E?E

24a is RATTING - it's rating (a sailor) around t, and means hunting for rats

So does that give a g for the middle? -A-G-E
...which makes it JANGLE - J (judge) + ANGLE !
