I'm not really sure just what your question is, but the basic word 'associate' comes from the Latin words 'ad', meaning 'to' and 'socius', meaning 'sharing' or 'united'. It has been used in English since the 14th century.

Obviously, the root-word 'associate' has been expanded into other forms and phrases, such as your 'in association with' which just means there is a connection/sharing between the items on either side of the phrase. For example: "These figures must be considered in association with the averages discovered earlier."
