Anyone would think the Daily Mail Group had extensive TV interests that rival the BBC and are using the veterans and those killed in the far east in a cynical way to boost its own interests.

77% of the population can receive Freeview. When the Switchover is completed in 2012, 98.5% will be able to get it (the same as analogue).

The BBC is the national broadcasting source, therefore they should broadcast occasions such as this, on their main channels

Since there had been many complaints over the BBC's actions, the Daily Mail were in their right to report on it.

Most commemmorations on TV seem to glorify war. Couple this with the war films and you are left feeling gung-ho. War is never like this as proved by the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. Maybe instead of showing coffins being unloaded at Brize Norton the public should witness the body parts laid out. The number of deaths do not do justice to the brutality of each tragedy.

Did the BBC give more prominent coverage to the VE Commemoration? I can't remember.

If they did this does seem wrong. The sacrifices made by the 14th Army, RAF and Royal Navy in the East were just as great, just as significant and just as worthy of remembrance as the campaign in mainland europe.

I should have added cc1, my father was out there too with the RAF and thought highly of Mountbatten. They were preparing for the invasion of Japan when the bombs were dropped and finished it all.

Mountbatten seems to have inspired a lot of affection from the Boys in Blue, I will never forget my father going into a pub to get us all a lunchtime drink and coming out in tears saying "those ***** ******* ******** have murdered my boss". I'm not sure if the tears or the language shocked me most.
