does anyone else find that nowadays bananas go "mealy" very quickly. We usedto buy a karge bunch every week and enjoyed them all. Now we end up having to use them with custard or made into cakes. We wrap half in newspaper and put in fridge, also tried Lakeland special bag, but no differeence/

Hi Mrs M - I tend to buy them when they are still pretty green - Tescos do an "eat me keep me" bunch, half yellow and half green, which keep well. I have a banana every day for breakfast so I need to buy a week's-worth at a time.
I've not heard of wrapping in newspaper, I thought newspaper helped ripen things rather than slow it up?
I agree though, there is nothing worse than a mushy banana!
Nooooo......not in fridge!
Bananas-and tomatoes-really suffer in cold. It's what MAKES them mealy.
pull them off the bunch they will stay fresh for longer

We wrap in bubblewrap and store in fridge - usually salad drawer.
Most bananas come into the country in some kind of refrigerated gas.( my husband used to be on the ships that brought them in ) As soon as they hit the air they begin to deteriorate. It's best to buy organic ones they last a lot better and taste fresher.
