He went to the hospital and was kept in 'for observation'. Is that normal procedure?

Think it means they are not sure what it is and they want to make sure. Happened to a bloke here and he had muscle spasm, of course it could be more serious.
It might be.

Not enough information.
Past medical history, drug therapy, what sort of pain......ect ect!

Seems a bit over the top to me, but they must have had a good reason.
Yes, they will be running all sorts of checks on him. They are very cautious when it comes to chest pain.
Agree with Sqad. They would only keep him in if they had concerns.
lofty ive left an update on my question re cardiac surgery...............excuse me sandy.
Going straight over Anne. Thanks for letting me know!! x
A normal ECG does not rule out a cardiac problem as the cause of the chest pain, depending on the type of pain, it's location etc. The definitive test is to determine the presence of certain enzymes in the blood, the enzyme that is only produced by a cardiac event is Troponin I, this peaks approx 12 hours after the event; therefore for a patient suspected of having a cardiac event will be admitted so that this blood test can be performed.
Chest pain doesn't always mean heart problems, maybe they suspected a spontaneous pneumothorax (collapsed lung) which is more common in tall, slim, sporty young men.
