I am a very clean, fastidious person and was horrified to find a maggot in my house the other day, what would cause this!

If it is just one, then the chances are it has been inadvertently carried in from outside.

Maggots are fly larvae, and are usually found in numbers in rotting food or other decaying matter. If your house is cean, it's highly unlikely that flies would find any detreitus on which to lay their eggs, so pop it outside, and don't worry about it.

yeah but it wasn't jsut anywhere, it was on the outside of my Rat's tank? and she's really old, could this be the cause?

No. Flies lay eggs in decaying matter, and they lay hundredds at a time, so you would never have just one maggot hatching. It's unlikely to be connected to your domesticated rat - they are clean animals, and unless she has any hidden rotting food or faeces, then my first answer still stands - the maggot has been carried in inadvertently, so don't panic.

I was a little worried, but i clean her out regularly anyway, so there wouldn't be any rotting food or faeces.

lots of insects leave single maggoty looking things around, one probably flew in and layed. don't worry, insects don't imply dirt, they will go anywhere, and it depends how long they stay there

Now i think about it, i actually saw the damned thing about a week ago, and i thought it was just a mayfly, nevermind i disposed of it anyway ; )

Maggots started dropping from the ceiling in my shop.  This week we are infested with flies.  And there's a restaurant upstairs.  You do the math!

Thats gross, i would report them to environmental health? where is it? so i know not to go there?
