hi, i want do do a course in nursing because i would love to be a childrens nurse, but i have no qualifications and am 26 yrs old. How long would it take to get qualified? Any help?
All nurses will require a university degree, so it's going to be a long haul to get there. (Up until Spring 2013, it's still theoretically possible to enter via the diploma route [ although many institutions may no longer offer the diploma because they've adopted the degree course instead] but, since you'd have to get some qualifications behind you before you could start either of the higher education courses, that would probably be too late for you anyway). first of all you'll need 5 gcses and then go onto A levels any is ok I did health and social care, this will take 3 years. Then you can either go to uni or do a foundation degree at college which is 2 years and then do one 1 at uni specialising in the area you want to work, but i doubt you will get funding for all this, ive done A levels and health and social care degree, went back to do teaching assistant course and have had to pay for it
Alternative is to get work as a health care assistant usually after a year you can do your NVQ3 in healthcare then many trusts operate a secondment system onto nurse training courses that way you will gain hands on experience and be paid while waiting and when training rather than having to manage on the bursary
Am not sure where you are from, but after the age of 25 in Wales, you are considered a mature student. You would have to do your access to nursing course which is a year course, and then apply for uni which would be another 3 years. Not sure if this is the same in England though xx
You will need to do your GCSE's (in english, maths and all sciences) then an access course which specialises in the nursing. These courses can be 1-2 yrs depending on the college/uni. The nursing degree is 3 yrs long.
