Why do some service wives or partners,girlfriends etc.,keep on moaning about their other half being away from home on duty bla bla bla when they knew what to expect? Bet they enjoy the decent pay,married quarters,perks etc.

How wrong can you be! We both were in the R.N.my husband serving 22+years mainly in subs. polaris,nuclear,and conventional,then joining an auxillary service in civvy street.I have lived in married quarters.I had my son in Scotland miles from anywhere no family present father at sea.It just goes with the territory,JUST GET ON WITH IT!
Goes without saying there are many dangerous occupations Deep Sea Fishing,R.N.L.I.,Air Ambulance with no Goverment help who rely on public donations etc. Nuff said.

How marvellous that you've NEVER EVER complained about your husband being away. obviously other people aren't quite as angelic as you.

Kate, who are these service wives etc that you hear complaining? I don't hear any. It's quite one thing to get together with other service wives and miss your husbands, that is natural, but I don't hear anyone bemoaning their lot. Your comments about current pay and conditions for the average squaddie are off beam - it's not decent, compared with a lot of salaries in civvy street.

Keyhole, my apologies for not thinking you had ever had anything to do with the military. I was obviously wrong. But this being the case, it surprises me even more how you could be so negative about other service wives, partners etc. as I would have thought you would have understood their lives better. Obviously I was wrong there too, as you seem to have little or no sympathy with today's military families. Makes me sad really.

Do not really understand why people join the services anyway.As there is no longer conscription--- why does anyone want to be a hero?

Strange post. My daughter is married to a soldier and is surrounded by other service families. I can quite honestly say I have never heard a single one of the women moan when their partners are away. Tears when they first leave, obviously, then they instantly become sole carer for the family and take care of everything while the men are away. They worry, especially when they hear that a soldier has been killed, but moan-no.
