When a IT chap sorted out my PC during the week (and he certainly did a good job) he has added a icon for the above mentioned, but as there are several other icons I`ve no idea what they are used for, should I leave them on my desktop or get rid?

If you right click and select Properties .. you can see if it's a shortcut to a pprogram installed. The Target box will show where the program is and what name it is installed as in the Program Files. Any shortcut can be safely deleted from desktop.
It it's an installation file, that can be deleted too .. as this would be used to install the program.
