Empty fields

We drove to the coast and back this morning (about 10 miles away) and it was really noticeable that the fields were empty. Usually they are full of cattle, but not today, not a single animal to be seen.
Is it "that" time of year? Burger making time?

We produce most of the country's sugar and along with surrounding counties, much of its supply of veg and salad. I'd be interested to know why your fields are all left to grassland too? Where are you?
