Hi Ed

Given the number of technical questions that are asked on this site which don't include the basic info of computer make & model, operating system, browser etc maybe altering the registration page to ask for this might help.

The technical gurus(everybody) could maybe see this by looking at a members profile.

This might reduce the number of times that this has to be asked for before the question can be answered.

a better suggestion would be a header on the section saying when you ask a question please give make model yadda yadda.

I'm not sure I want to be updating my profile every time I buy a new computer (or camera, or toaster for that matter). Woofgang's suggestion sounds more doable.

Yes, but some people asking these questions don't realise what information is needed.

^ou mean like the guidance notes we have on Q&P that tell posters show to set out crossword clues so we always get the exact clue, details of letters etc

Well some users ignore those, woofgang, but it may help some posters and certainly won't do any harm

computer is only one thing though... what about phone, tablet, oven, kettle etc etc ... people ask about all sorts of things and it might be confusing if someone asks about a laptop - but is asking for a friend or just wants a general answer if people assume its the one in the profile.

also most people just wouldnt bother to fill it in
