An advert from the tax people on AB. Does anyone else think it's a bit menacing?

My son has had a letter from the tax saying he owes £1200.00 because he did not send in his self assessment for 2010-2011. He was self employed for 1 month in nov/dec 2009 and that's it! Apparently he should have told them he only did that one month. they sent him a tax return form to his old address in april 2011 and he as unaware. Then they've sent reminders to the old address which he never got. then letter threatening the fine, which he never got, he's been paye all the time and so they know he was working for an employer. yet they ignore their own evidence, so as i said, who do you declare it to? they ignore it all anyway.
I've been on PAYE all my working life - every month I pay the tax for that month - always - every time.
I get incredibly grumpy when people moan about the problems of 'self assessment' - you get endless allowances, can delay paying your tax for months (if not years) and yet still harp on as if the world is pissing on your fireworks.
Grow Up - fill the forms in nice and early (or pay someone to do it for you) and relax knowing that you are getting a much better deal than poor buggers like me ...

Dotty. Unfortunate, I know for your son. But unfortunately even though he was working for an employer, it wouldn't rule out that he was also self-employed.
I now have had to complete a self assessment form because I had a capital gain (same form) and unfortunately I will probably stay in the system until I let them know otherwise. I employed an accountant and ended up paying nothing!! If I had done it myself I would have been in a complete muddle.

sunny-dave what do you mean by 'delay paying your tax for months?' the tax office takes 20% of the gross every week from my OH's pay, at the end of the financial year when i put in his return they will refund any overpayment, how is that delaying tax? it is infact overpaying tax and waiting up to 12 months to get that overpayment back!
don't see the ads any more, i have adblocker, that applies to all sites.
I also think that many tv ads are very threatening, it's as though ramming home the message about your weight, or pension, wages, paying tax is all important and that to deviate from taking care of yourself, not smoking and paying the taxman oodles you are a bad, even evil person. Think it's all a bit nanny state
