Coax Splitter

If I use a splitter from my main input to an external( small telly in the kitchen) tv will the signal degrade or cause any damage to either tv?

Wont cause any damage, maybe a slight degrade in the picture, but if you make sure all connections done properly not recognisable.

We've done that for years,and it was fine then for some reason we had to buy a special box with channel 36 on it, and aerial plugs all over the place, doesn't work as well.

If you have a strong signal you'll not notice the difference. If you have a less strong signal then a powered splitter/amp may be an option.
