Technically the order was disbanded by Pope Clement V in 1312. However, some remnants of the order survived in Portugal, simply changing their name to the Knights of Christ. In 1789 Maria I of Portugal secularised the order and 1910 with the end of the monarchy the Order of Christ was extinguished. However, it was revived in 1917.
Many other groups have used alleged associations with the Knights Templar to enhance their own image and mystery; however, there is no clear historical connection between the Knights Templar and any of the modern organizations, most of which emerged at the earliest in the eighteenth century.
