It needs a good prune but is it too late. I've googled but some say spring others say up until mid August. I would have done it earlier but my swarm of baby sparrows were using it to hide in.

I normally trim mine after the blooms have faded ie., late spring. You might get away with a prune now but I wouldn't make it too severe.
Pruning this shrub should be kept to a minimum really, just enough to maintain the shape you want.
The optimum pruning time is spring and summer, but before mid August, otherwise young growth may be damaged by frost.

Thanks, I'll think i'll try to leave it till next spring so it's got longer to recover before the frosts.
