Never put a valuable crystal vase on a work surface in the utility room directly above the washing machine just before it goes onto a fast spin cycle.

The first thing I knew about it was when I heard the smash...
I don't have anything crystal.
at least you're on the mend, if not the vase

don't trap the slow cooker cable between the pot and the lid
Don't drop your electric toothbrush down the toilet when it's still plugged in

I am mightily p'd off as the vase was my Nan's
I haven't got a 'utility' room, problem solved.
insurance claim, mrsO, if you have accidental damage cover.....

boxy, I have a massively high excess which is far more than the vase is worth. Also it was more priceless sentimental value than monetary
On a similar note, don't put a large Galileo thermometer on top of a narrow television if you are then going to have the volume on max all the time - my mother did this and slowly and surely it sneaked off in spectacular fashion.
Things of sentimental value are irreplaceable. Sorry...
