I've just got my first website and when i type the company name into google,it does not show.Is there any way to get it on there?

you have to notify them and there is a link to the page to do that. GOOD LUCK!

Many search engines trawl the internet finding new sites and adding them to their databases, it can take a while.

Make sure you have META information on your web pages with keywords. These keywords help people find your site.

The meta tags go in the head section of a web page.

Search engines CANNOT trawl the web looking for new sites. Their robots can only find you if another site links to you. The only way to appear in a google search without any linking sites, is through submission to their directory . For referance, the directory google use is dmoz.
Google engine also no longer examines the meta keywords as this is too open to abuse. Link relevancy is the new buzz term.
