Did anyone watch the programme about Tesco last night? If so, what did you think of it?I was really quite shocked to hear what they charge their suppliers.

Didnt anyone watch the programme about Tesco last night? Im Amazed!
No I didn't see it. I never watch anything to do with Tesco.
Yes,I watched it. I'd never realised they took !money from their suppliers...whether the suppliers goods did well or poorly. Tesco has slid further down in my estimation.
All the big supermarkets do it, although I don't know about the Co-Op and Waitrose

It really shocked me pastafreak.
The dark side of commerce. Many large companies have similar practices.
Question Author
Yes. I dont think many people realised this happens.
I wish I'd watched it really. I avoided it but would liked to have seen it now and encouraged OH to understand why I don't use Tesco for anything ever.
If a supplier doesn't like Tesco's terms though why don't they stop dealing with them and find another supermarket. Is it any different to Tesco negotiating a big discount? (I'd feel happier with the discount approach rather than fees, but I'm not sure I can justify the preference- maybe it just seems like 'protection money')
It's the way markets work isn't it? The supermarkets want the best deal they can so they can get the best deal for their customers. If suppliers can't supply profitably they will eventually seek new buyers or change their business
You're right FF, its a tough and competitive environment. Its just that Tesco agree to take a whole crop, for example, change a farmers entire strategy and then cut them to the bone once its grown. Even drop them when they have no-one else to sell to and leave them to reseed land that is not suitable now for teh crops they used to grow.
Unfortunately no one appears to call it by its name--Bribery
I shop at tescos and did not hold any strong feelings for or against them. But I found some of there tactics unsavoury. It did not sound like their 'business' to me more like dealing with the mafia.
